Rainbows Ends - Kidz Kingdom

Styleline Rainbow brings colour to Rainbows End

Kidz Kingdom is the hottest place for kids under 8 to go play! Based on the magical land of Rainbow Kingdom, the Kidz Kingdom was designed for younger kids to be able to play all year round protected from both rain and sun.

Rainbows End wanted a “rainbow” overhead for the children in the form of a curved, multi-coloured canopy that would cover the rides and playground area.

Dimond Roofing’s Styleline profile was selected to cover the 42m drape curve roof in vivid colours that were in line with the park’s current rainbow colour scheme. Pacific Coilcoaters supplied ColorCote ZinaCore in strong primary reds, yellows, oranges, greens, blues and purples to form the main sections of the rainbow; this was used in conjunction with Durolite panels to let natural light through.

The Styleline was provided pre-painted on both sides, to meet the requirements of a bright roof both on the landscape and that can be seen from below within the park, creating an atmosphere of fun and adventure for the kids to play in.

The builder worked in conjunction with Maurice Harris from Harris Foster Consulting (HFC) as the projects engineers to ensure the area was covered so that the rides and playground were comfortably accommodated.

Maurice says “having the canopy supported by L-shaped legs attached to the neighbouring building creates the illusion that it is floating”.

This met the client’s requirements for a rainbow atop the kid’s park. To achieve this look the canopy sits on steel supports more than 8m tall with its apex rising to be more than 11.5m from the ground. Although it is attached to a neighbouring building the canopy is designed to be self-supporting with 600mm universal columns on one side and 457mm circular columns on the other side. The main curve is formed with welded 600mm deep beams at 103kg/m. The roof is supported on HSTC steel purlins. As part of the cleaning schedule the “unwashed” areas of the roof are regularly cleaned during high pressure wash downs.

Along with completing the rainbow over Kidz Kingdom, Dimond Roofing also supplied 1400 LM of Zincalume to upgrade the roof on the adjoining building which houses party rooms for the kids and a café for parents to take a break whilst watching their kids play.

Work began on the job in November 2012 and was completed in time for a grand opening of the refurbished area in 2013.

The new roof has made a vivid impression on the Manukau skyline, adding a burst of colour to the traditionally dull industrial surroundings. So next time you’re in the area pop down and explore the fun and adventure that can be found under the “rainbow” at Kidz Kingdom.

Get the edge.
