Addressing storm damage to your roof

What to check for after a storm

One of the main functions of a roof is to keep rain and moisture out of your home.

With the winter rain setting in it is important to make sure that your roof is in shape to protect your family. Ensure that you have checked the condition of your roof before it’s too late.

To help, we have a handy roof checklist here to get you started:

Although your roof might be in good shape now that does not mean that a heavy storm during winter won’t change that. So, what do you do after a severe storm?

After a storm passes, make sure to check your roof for damage from wind, hail or other sources, document any problems and work with your insurance company and a knowledgeable contractor to fix any issues. If any water stains appear on your ceiling or walls, you likely need repairs or a roof replacement.

You can also look for signs of storm damage from the ground. Check for irregularities in your roof shape or missing pieces of metal fascia, including any metal pieces displaced from around your chimney. Also, assess the condition of exhaust pipes, valleys, outer edges or angles where the roof meets the walls.

If your roof has suffered substantial damage from a storm and you think your roof needs replacement, get in touch with a reputable installer in your area to assist.

Stay safe — avoid going on the roof to check for damage yourself and instead contact a professional roofer, it is important not to attempt repairs on your own.
